Abstract
We have made several important discoveries to identify pivotal and specific factors regulating different steps of autophagy in mammals, paving the way for our ultimate goal of reconstitution of autophagy in humans. Our work is not a simply replica of yeast study. Among the proteins (Barkor, Rubicon, NRBF2, TECPR1) we identified and characterized in mammalian autophagy, only Barkor is the functional homolog of yeast Atg14. The rest are unique in mammals. More importantly, their biochemical mechanisms in autophagy, including Barkor (also called Atg14 or Atg14L) in membrane curvature sensing and tethering, Rubicon in endosome maturation, TECPR1 in autophagosome-lysosome fusion, are fundamentally important and have never been described in yeast and any other species.
 
Introduction of speaker
Dr. Qing Zhong received his M.D.(1996) in Medicine from Peking Union Medical College and Ph.D. (2002) in Molecular Medicine from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. At University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he had worked as Postdoctoral Fellow for four years. He has been an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California at Berkeley, since 2006.
His research mainly analyzes the balance of the related biological processes determines the cell fate. His lab studies how these programmed cell death pathways are regulated, and emphasizes on the biochemical characterization of the key steps in these pathways in mammalian cells.
He has published many papers on Science, Cell, PNAS, Genes Dev. etc.
